Enabling Works

Enabling works is the very first step in most construction projects. It covers activities from site preparation, building access routes through to putting up safety signs and installing security fencing.
Enabling works may also include facilitating works such as site preparatory works such as major demolition, removal of contaminated materials, reptile mitigation measures, and soil stabilisation.

WHAT DOES ENABLING WORK COVER?

Enabling works refer to the activities undertaken to prepare a site for the main phase of a construction project. These may involve fully demolishing a building and clearing the debris to allow contractors to commence work on a new structure, conducting a soft strip-out, removing asbestos, partial demolition, and other preparatory tasks.
A variety of preparatory activities are covered by ‘enabling works’. These include:
  • Site clearance
  • Asbestos surveying and removal
  • Temporary works
  • Facade retention
  • Propping
  • Opening up works
  • Strip outs
  • Dismantling of old machinery
  • Groundworks
  • Partial or full demolition of buildings and structures
